LIB DEMS WELCOME TESCO DECISION IN KNOWLE

TESCO has pulled out of plans for a new shop front and other matters at the old Friendship pub site, in Knowle.
Lib Dem councillors Chris Davies and Gary Hopkins have welcomed the company’s decision, which follows planning officers’ decision to recommend refusal of three applications.
These were for signage, an ATM cash machine and a new shop front at the site, where Tesco wants to open a new store.
Planning officials say the proposed signage would harm the look of the building; the ATM could create an unsafe environment; and the shop front would jar with its surroundings.
Knowle councillor Chris Davies said: “This is good news. Nearly 2,000 people signed a petition against having a store there and for keeping it in community use instead.”
And Knowle’s other local councillor Gary Hopkins said: “I’m glad that a firm line has been taken, causing Tesco to at least have second thoughts on the details of this scheme.
“We hope that they will reconsider the position overall and listen to the community.
“Tesco would have been welcomed at Broadwalk shopping centre or in the regeneration scheme in Knowle West. But local people have said they are not wanted at the Friendship.”
