SENIOR LIB DEMS HOST TESCO TALKS

TESCO is to consider calls for independent consultation over its plans for a store in Cheltenham Road, Bristol.
This follows a meeting at the Council House today (Monday 24th) between representatives of the chain and campaigners against the scheme.
The meeting was called and chaired by city council leader Barbara Janke and Bristol West MP Stephen Williams, both Lib Dem.
At the meeting the campaigners said they had a viable alternative to the store scheme but felt it was not appropriate to discuss details with Tesco.
Barbara Janke and Stephen Williams put forward the idea of an independent consultant carrying out a full consultation in the area around Cheltenham Road and Stokes Croft to see whether people wanted a Tesco store at the former Jesters site.
Tesco corporate affairs manager Michael Kissman said his company would consider this option over the next two or three days. He made no commitment about how the company might react to the outcome of consultation.
