BARBARA JANKE RE-ELECTED LEADER

BRISTOL City Council leader Barbara Janke has been re-elected leader of the Liberal Democrat group, which increased its majority in Thursday’s local elections.
The group, which with 36 councillors won overall control in Bristol for the first time in 2009, now has 38 members - a majority of six over all other parties on the council.
This morning (Saturday 8th) the group re-elected experienced leader Barbara Janke at its annual meeting at the Council House. Former Lord Mayor Simon Cook was re-elected deputy leader.
Afterwards, Councillor Janke said: “I’m thrilled by Thursday’s results and I’m now looking forward to continuing to lead a strong Lib Dem team on the council. We have lots of work to do.
“The city needs confident and stable leadership in what promises to be a challenging year ahead.”
Jackie Norman and Mark Bailey were re-elected as chair of the group and chief whip respectively.
The Lib Dem group’s annual meeting is divided into two halves. The first was today. The second is at the Council House on Monday (10th) at 6.30pm, when members will elect a cabinet.
