LIB DEM LEADERS TO HOST TESCO MEETING WITH COMMUNITY CAMPAIGNERS
BRISTOL City Council leader Barbara Janke and Bristol West MP Stephen Williams (both Lib Dem) are to bring together representatives of Tesco and campaigners against a new Tesco store to discuss alternative ideas for the site.
A meeting will be held at the Council House, on College Green, to look at schemes put forward for the former Jesters site, in Cheltenham Road, by community campaigners.
“We want Stokes Croft to become a distinctive destination in Bristol and do not believe another chain store will help achieve this aim,” said Barbara Janke.
“If a viable alternative can be found, we would like Tesco to consider it. We are delighted that they and the campaigners have accepted our invitation to discuss these options.”
The invitation to the meeting - which will take place on Monday, May 24 - follows an open letter the two senior Lib Dems’ sent Tesco boss Sir Terry Leahy earlier this month, urging him to meet campaigners.
