Primary Schools consensus shunned by Labour

Classroom - primary school

Labour have shunned Liberal Democrat and Conservative attempts to develop an all party consensus on the Primary Review, which proposes to close St Pius X School, Stockwood Green School and St George’s School.

Cllr Barbara Janke said:

“The Council needs the parties to pull together, to work together so we can put a consensus view to the DCFS (Education Department) that will secure us the £12M we need.

“I suggested last autumn that all party approach to this controversial subject should be adopted. This was eventually taken up and all parties have met. We put constructive suggestions forward from those meetings in writing today, as requested by Cllr Peter Hammond the Executive Member. Cllr Hammond has now rejected those suggestions and thereby made it clear that he intends to proceed with closing the three schools.

“The Leader of Council and her Executive Member should be leading efforts to develop an all-party consensus approach. Regrettably they do not seem interested in alternatives or consider that their plans could be anything other than perfect.”
